Life has a rather ironic way of tossing curveballs. And in my case, those curveballs looked suspiciously like knee sprains and wobbly ankles. But as I sat on the sidelines, nursing my injuries, a realization struck: while I couldn’t control the setbacks life threw my way, I could control my response. And thus, my post-injury mantra was born: Consistency over intensity.
Why Consistency?
1. Small Steps, Big Gains:
A full-on, high-intensity workout might feel like you’re making significant progress. But without regularity, it’s just a flash in the pan. Consistency, even if it means lighter exercises, ensures you’re building and maintaining a foundation. Over time, these small, regular efforts stack up, leading to genuine, lasting improvement.
2. Mental Fortitude:
Injuries are as much a mental game as a physical one. Pushing oneself to the brink daily can be demoralizing, especially when progress feels slow. But showing up, even for a short stretch or a gentle jog, is a testament to resilience. It’s a daily affirmation that you’re committed to your wellness journey, come what may.
3. Injury Prevention:
After my run-ins (pun intended) with injuries, I’ve realized that going all out without adequate preparation or recovery can be a recipe for disaster. Consistency promotes a more balanced approach, allowing muscles and joints to adapt, thereby reducing the risk of future injuries.
Intense Isn’t Always Best
Intensity has its place. Those adrenaline-pumping sessions can be exhilarating and do lead to breakthroughs. However, post-injury, my perspective shifted. Intensity without strategy or respect for one’s body can be counterproductive. Instead, a more balanced approach, valuing both consistency and intensity in their due measure, became my guiding principle.
Showing Up Matters
The days following an injury can be clouded with doubt and frustration. The path ahead seems steep, and the temptation to quit, all too real. But in these moments, showing up, even in the smallest way, sets a tone. It’s a nod to persistence, a reminder that every journey is a sum of its parts. A ten-minute walk one day, a gentle stretch the next, and so on. Over time, these moments coalesce, forming the backbone of recovery and growth.
As someone who’s had more than his fair share of hilarious missteps and genuine setbacks, I can vouch for the power of showing up. Life will, inevitably, throw its curveballs. But with consistency as your compass, you’re better equipped to navigate, adapt, and ultimately thrive.
So, to anyone nursing an injury, feeling the weight of setbacks, or simply in need of a renewed perspective, remember this: It’s not about the intensity of a single moment but the consistency of many. Keep showing up. Your future self will thank you.
